Tsunami warning for 6 provinces along Andaman coast retracted

PHUKET, 11 August 2009 (NNT) – The National Disaster Warning Center has retracted a warning for a possible tsunami after issuing it to 6 southern provinces along the Andaman Sea.

A 7.7 Richter earthquake, which occurred at 2.55am this morning in the Andaman Sea and spurred tsunami warnings by the National Disaster Warning Center. The earthquake center was located 16 kilometers underwater and 876 kilometers off Thailand’s shores.

The center stated that the warning was to be cautious as the possibility of a tsunami was threatening the provinces of Phuket, Phangnga, Krabi, Ranong, Satun and Trang. Latest reports however have concluded that no tsunami formed due to the earthquake and that the situation along the coast is safe.
