Thai and Cambodian troops are not expected to negatively affect Thailand’s macro-economy

BANGKOK, 27 April 2011 (NNT) – A series of border skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian troops are not expected to negatively affect Thailand’s macro-economy, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT).

BoT Governor Dr Prasarn Trairatvorakul believed there would be no impacts on the national economy as the value of Thai exports to Cambodia accounts for less than 1% of the country’s total trade. Besides, if border clashes were not expanding in scale, damage to the border trade would be slight, he said.

Nevertheless, the governor viewed that the clashes have caused difficulties among Thai and Cambodian villagers residing in the disputed areas; therefore, the sooner the battle ended the better it would be for both sides.
