KResearch reported that the SET index last week closed at 1,022.94 points, up 0.39% from the week earlier following a declining concern over the Greek debt crisis. Meanwhile, the MAI index closed at 300.69 points, up 1.79% from the week before.

The SET index fell last Monday as investors delayed investment before rebounding on Tuesday after Greek debt crisis partially eased off; however, it went down on Wednesday due to bad economic news from the US and concerns over domestic politics before going up again on Friday.

KResearch and Kasikorn Securities predicted that the SET index this week would go up due to improving situation in the Greek debt crisis and investors’ speculations. The support line will be at 1,009-985 points and the resistance line at 1,036-1,050 points respectively.

Investors are however warned of selling force to reduce risk before the upcoming 3 July general election. Another domestic factor that should be monitored for this week is the monthly economic report on the Thai economy. External factors in focus are the global oil prices and reports of US economic figures.

Several red-shirt leaders including Natthawut Saikua, Jatuporn Prompan, Kwanchai Praipana, Nisit Sintuprai, Yoswarit Chuklom and Whiphutalaeng Pattanaphuthai were seen surrendering to police at the Royal Thai Police headquarters at about 1.30pm.

But three other leaders — Arisman Pongruengrong, Weng Tojirakarn and Arisman Pongruengrong — did not surrender.

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan announced from the stage at 1.15pm that that he and other leaders would surrender to prevent further losses.

“I apologise to you all but I don’t want any more losses. I am devastated too. We will surrender,” he said.

He also announced the ending of the anti-government protest.

But the announcement did not put the end to waves of riotting and arsoning around the capital. Many key buildings were set ablaze such as upmarket Central World shopping complex near the Ratchaprasong intersection, the TV Channel 3 station, a section of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) building and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority Office were set ablaze.

The Channel 3 was forced to stop broadcasting in the late afternoon after the Maleenont building was set on fire. Employees of the network had to flee to the building’s top floor waiting for evacuation by helicopter.

There were many incidents of vandalism as rioters burned down public properties such as phone booths and bank branches.

BANGKOK, Aug 8 (TNA) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday urged the Thai people to be active to learn, access information, reform themselves, and wipe out corruption in order to help develop the country.

Delivering a lecture on “Thailand Climbs Up” to top officials of the Office of the Civil Service Commission, he said Thailand would not be in a position to compete in the world community when the global economy recovers if it fails to change itself.

Because of this, it is necessary to encourage Thai people to be active, love to learn, access varied information and analyse it, and review what they have done regularly for the betterment of their living.

He conceded that there would be resistance on the part of people who lose privilege or benefit from changes.

Regarding corruption, the premier said the more anti-graft laws are enacted, the more loopholes are found.

Unless the problem was solved, it would fuel burdens in the future, but if it is addressed, Thailand will be able to climb up proudly, he said.

Asked how seriously the current political situation would impact the “Thailand Climbs Up” slogan, he said politics is a key factor to the country’s development.

Many countries are watch to see whether Thai democracy will stride ahead, or retreat.

“This government pledges to neither violate the basic rights of its people nor use violence against opponents,” Mr Abhisit affirmed.

“However, in a country where the democratic system is adopted, no one can claim that the majority of people are unable to shape the law,” said the premier. (TNA)

BANGKOK, June 27 (TNA) – The government’s plan to issue its first batch of savings bonds – an issue valued at Bt 50 billion — will neither fuel rising interest rates nor affect the liquidity in the system very much, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT).

BoT Deputy Governor Atchana Waiquamdee said the issuance of the government savings bonds would result in financial institutions adjusting for improved services because depositors have more channels for savings.

She said the first batch of Bt50 billion baht in such bonds represents 0.5 per cent of current total deposits of Bt9.6 trillion.

The bonds will offer an interest rate of 3 per cent in the first two years, 4 per cent in the third year, and 5 per cent in the fourth and fifth years, unlike deposit rates offered by commercial banks, which remain at 1.5-2.75 per cent.

Under the circumstances, some depositors might shift some of their deposits to the new government saving bonds.

“The BoT must monitor the liquidity following the issuance of the bonds by the Ministry of Finance so that it can be used to establish the policy interest rate in a proper manner,” she said. (TNA)
