Some areas around BKK remain unsafe

BANGKOK, 20 May 2010 (NNT) – The situation in some areas around Bangkok, especially at Ratchaprasong junction, remain at risk of further terrorism acts despite the military’s late-night operation to control the riot, according to the Center for Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) and Army Spokesperson, Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

Colonel Sansern stated that the situation in some areas currently remain irregular and unsafe. The general public will still not be allowed to travel in and out of some areas in the capital, especially at Ratchaprasong junction and the area around the Central World due to fear of potential violence.

Colonel Sansern also stressed that Ratchaprasong junction and the area around Central World were still labeled as a danger zone; however, CRES will coordinate with military officers in a bid to make sure that no terrorist are in the area or hidden in the buildings.

Central World, located at Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong business district and one of the biggest shopping complexes in Thailand, was yesterday set on fire by the rioters who were opposed to the surrender announcement of some core leaders of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). Some parts of Central World have already collapsed.
