New palm oil extraction system under development

BANGKOK, 23 January 2010 (NNT) – The Energy Ministry has supported the Faculty of Agriculture of Chiang Mai University to study the possibility of planting oil plants and developing a highly efficient palm oil extracting system.

Energy Minister MD Wanarat Chanukul said that the new oil extracting system would not create water wastes, with the capability to produce palm oil of 2.5-5 tons per hour and extract oil of up to 22% of the palms used. The system can also be used to create biodiesel for the community.

Funds for the research will be supported by the Energy Conservation Promotion Fund.

Somchai Sittichok, an entrepreneur from the private sector, said that the palm oil extraction system would benefit farmers since the waste palms could be used as fertilizer and animal feed.

After testing has been completed, the new palm oil extracting system will be commercially manufactured.
