House dissolution likely in early May

BANGKOK, 11 March 2011 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has expressed confidence that organic laws governing the general election process will be considered by MPs next week before House dissolution can be called in early May.

Following his one-hour meeting with the Election Commission (EC) today, Prime Minister Abhisit insisted that the three organic laws currently pending approval by the House of Representatives would be considered within next week. If the laws are given a green light, the Prime Minister plans to seek His Majesty the King’s approval for the issuance of a royal decree on the organization of the next general election in order for the House to be dissolved in the first week of May. The election will then be held in June as recommended by the EC.

Mr Abhisit believed that there would be no problems in the electoral rules and regulations as well as the arrangement of election constituencies in compliance with the revised charter. The Prime Minister asserted that since the very beginning he had been contemplating early House dissolution in a bid to prevent the political atmosphere from turning sour.
