Govt to send 100,000 USD to Haiti today

BANGKOK, 22 January 2010 (NNT) – The government will deliver 100,000 USD cash donation to assist Haitian victims on Friday after their country was rocked by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on 12 January 2010.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya stated that Thai ambassador to Mexico City Charuwan Thiemthad would represent Thailand in delivering the cash donation to Mexico for assistance in Haiti. He said 100,000 USD (about 3.3 million THB) would be used to buy foods, medical supplies, and other necessities.

Regarding cash donation made via the Krung Thai Bank’s Government House branch, the minister said there was about 12 million THB in total as of 21 January 2010 while three million THB more was donated via his ministry.

Mr Kasit stated firmly that the Thai government would give assistance to Haiti continuously, not only short-term aid but also long-term rehabilitation.

Mr Kasit also reported that the ministry was able to contact seven Thai people residing in Haiti at present, and all of them were safe. He noted they could notify their intention to return to Thailand immediately through Mexico.
