Extradition will be requested if Thaksin enters Cambodia

BANGKOK, 26 October 2009 (NNT) – Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insists the government will proceed with the extradition protocol if former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra enters Cambodia.

PM Abhisit Vejjajiva said ASEAN leaders did not raise the issue on Thaksin by Cambodian PM Hun Sen for discussion, during the ASEAN Summit, as they intended not to let domestic political and border problems hinder regional cooperation. The issue did not pose any concern because ASEAN leaders only focused on their dialogue partners. Besides, he said, it is still unnecessary to server the relations with Cambodia, but the latter’s standpoint is yet to be seen.

Mr Abhisit added that if Mr Thaksin takes a refuge in Cambodia, the Cambodian government would need to follow the extradition protocol agreed upon by both countries. He affirmed that Thailand would definitely proceed with the request.
