New PTT natural gas production plant may end nation´s need to import LPG by mid 2010

BANGKOK, 13 August 2009 (NNT) - The Department of Energy Business reported the possibility that by the middle of the next year Thailand might end its dependency on imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and have all the nation’s natural gas demands supplied by new PTT production plants.

Director-General of the Department of Energy Business Pheerapol Sakarin said the Kingdom’s LPG situation had stabilized as the economy had slowed its fluctuation. He noted that a 6th production plant by PTT, set to be completed by the end of this year, should increase domestically-produced natural gas and end the Kingdom’s dependency on imported supplies by the middle of 2010.

LPG usage has begun to steady at about 400,000 to 500,000 tons per month. The nation’s LPG production is currently 340,000 tons.

Presently, 180,000 tons of LPG are used in households, 100,000 tons used in transport, and 60,000 tons used in industries with the potential to rise.
