Energy Minister: ASEAN will become major producer, exporter of biofuel

BANGKOK, 7 September 2009 (NNT) – Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul expressed confidence that ASEAN would become a major producer and exporter of biofuel within the next few years.

MD Wannarat indicated that ASEAN had adequate potential to grow into a major biofuel producer and exporter of the world since each member country had the capability to cultivate crops for biofuel production, especially Indonesia and Malaysia, which ranked number one and two among the world’s palm exporters. The minister elaborated that Thailand’s geography was beneficial to the country’s goal to become the center for development and production of raw materials for instant biofuel.

In addition, MD Wannarat indicated that Thailand was one of the leaders in bioenergy due to its various plans to promote the use of biofuel for over 15 years.
