Food price on the rise during Chinese New Year

MAHA SARAKHAM, 9 February 2010 (NNT) – The price of meat and vegetables tended to increase amidst rising demand during the Chinese New Year festival.

Thai-Chinese people tend to purchase large amounts of offering goods for the Chinese New Year Festival, including pork, chicken, vegetables and fruits, causing a shortage and price increase.

After a survey on the price of consumer goods in local markets, it was found that the price of pork increased to 140 THB per kilogram. However, the price of chicken is to remain at 75 THB per kilogram, chicken breast at 110 THB per kilogram, and chicken calf, chicken wings and internal organs at 80 THB per kilogram.

The price of oranges has increased from 30 THB to 50 THB per kilogram and is expected to reach 60-70 THB per kilogram during the Chinese New Year. Meanwhile, the price of bananas will also increase from 60 to 70 THB per kilogram and will stand at 80-90 THB per kilogram during the Festival. The price of other fruits will likely increase by 5-10 THB per kilogram from now until the Chinese New Year festival.
