Dr Wannarat: 20% energy reduction to be implemented by 2012

BANGKOK, 9 September 2009 (NNT) – The Energy Ministry is expected to cut the country’s energy consumption to reduce constructions of more power plants, operating costs for entrepreneurs and global warming.

Energy Minister Wannarat Charnukul stated that the ministry aimed at curtailing national energy consumption by another 20% of total current usage approximately at 100 billion baht annually by 2011 after achieving the reduction of the country’s energy consumption by 30 billion baht during the previous year.

Dr Wannarat said the ministry would seek cooperation with four major agencies including the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries to carry out a public relations campaign to promote energy conservation throughout the country.

In addition, the minister expressed confidence that the government’s measures on State Oil Funds could prevent the petrol price of B2 diesel from exceeding 30 baht a liter as the current price of B2 diesel stood at 25 baht per liter.
