Customs law asked to be amended

BANGKOK, 1 June 2009 (NNT) – The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) will propose the Finance Ministry to review customs law in order to be fair to all concerned.

President of JSCCIB Mr Apisak Tantiworawong revealed after the meeting of JSCCIB that JSCCIB had discussed about the amendments of customs law, deemed unfair in several articles, especially the fine which was adjusted from four to five times the value of goods, regardless of intention.

Besides, the Customs Department was authorized to judge the case in the same manner as the court of justice. Meanwhile the statute of limitations was extended to ten years, which was deemed too long by JSCCIB. Therefore it would propose to the Finance Minister to consider further amendments to the law later.

President of the Federation of Thai Industries Mr Santi Wilassakdanon said that JSCCIB had also discussed about the guideline to establish industrial estates along the borders in order to support migrant workers from neighboring countries and boost the economy along the border.
