Bhumjaithai urges canvassers, candidates to beware of danger

BANGKOK, 28 June 2011 (NNT) – The Bhumjaithai Party has reiterated to all canvassers and MP candidates to be on high alert for attacks after one more canvasser of the party was shot dead in Ratchaburi province yesterday.

Following the murder of Mr Witthaya Sriphum, head of Ratchaburi’s Don Yai Tambon Administrative Organization and election canvasser of the Bhumjaithai Party, Bhumjaithai Spokesperson Supachai Jaisamut noted that the incident signified the persistence of political violence during this period. He said such an attack was specifically aimed at his party in a bid to obstruct it from winning majority votes in 77 constituencies as targeted earlier.

The fresh shooting shortly followed the killing of another Bhumjaithai canvasser Suban Jiraphanvanich, head of Lop Buri Provincial Administrative Organization, on 16 June in Bangkok.

Mr Supachai also voiced his belief that the competition would become more hostile and more violent incidents could still be seen in certain areas. Therefore, all canvassers and MP candidates of Bhumjaithai are encouraged to be wary of danger and prioritize their own safety.

Moreover, the Spokesperson called for the police to seek out the assailants at haste and use them as the key to the mastermind. He was also adamant that the attack was sparked by political conflicts at the national rather than the local level as speculated.
