2012 Apocalypse only a myth, says Astronomer

BANGKOK, 9 January 2010 (NNT) – An astronomer affirms that the 2012 apocalypse is unreal, stating that the event is a natural phenomena which occurs every 11 years.

Speaking of the wide spread rumor about the world’s apocalypse, Assoc Prof Boonraksa Sunthorntham, Director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), said astronomical researches showed only that in 2012 the sun would discharge the strong electromagnetic field. The finding however caused public concern that the magnetic ray would reach the Earth and cause disaster such as earthquakes or a satellite-system breakdown. Mr Boonraksa said that in fact the solar phenomenon is normal and happens every 11 years.

He said, however, the Earth’s magnetic pole reversal, which usually occurs every 100,000 years could take place in 2010. There is no clear indication pinning down the exact time of the occurrence. The professor stated that such an event would have no significant effect on the Earth’s inhabitants besides the inaccurate use of compasses and the possible migration of some bird species.

So far there is no concrete evidence to prove the world-end day myth, Mr Bookraksa concluded.
